Reports are circulating that Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, is on the verge of making a significant career move to the NFL.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo suggests that a deal between Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers is within reach. What’s even more interesting is the possibility of Harbaugh bringing some of his trusted Wolverines staffers along with him.
NFL reporter Aaron Wilson revealed the details that Harbaugh could look to take quite a few Michigan Wolverines coaches with him to the NFL.
If Harbaugh secures the Chargers’ head coaching position, he may choose to maintain some familiarity within his coaching staff. Michigan’s defensive coordinator, Jesse Minter, and Harbaugh’s son, Jay Harbaugh, who serves as the special teams coordinator, could potentially retain their roles in the NFL.
For the crucial position of offensive coordinator, Harbaugh is reportedly considering Greg Roman. While Roman didn’t coach at Michigan, he has a history of collaboration with Harbaugh, having previously served as the offensive coordinator for both the Stanford Cardinal and the San Francisco 49ers during Harbaugh’s tenure. Notably, Roman also worked with the Baltimore Ravens under John Harbaugh.
It’s worth noting that Minter has prior experience working under John Harbaugh as Baltimore’s defensive assistant and defensive backs coach before joining the Wolverines in 2022. Under Minter’s leadership, Michigan’s defense achieved remarkable success, allowing an FBS-low 10.4 points per game during a flawless 15-0 season that culminated in a national championship.
Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports speculates that Minter could be inclined to follow Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers, considering Harbaugh as the leading candidate to replace Brandon Staley as the head coach of the organization.
Jay Harbaugh, Jim’s son, also has a unique connection to NFL coaching, having been part of his uncle’s Ravens staff during their Super Bowl victory against Jim’s 49ers. Jay’s journey led him to Ann Arbor in 2015, where he joined the Wolverines’ coaching ranks.
Additionally, both Minter and Jay Harbaugh had opportunities to serve as acting head coaches during Jim Harbaugh’s three-game suspension for alleged recruiting violations. In September, they led Michigan to resounding victories over East Carolina and UNLV, respectively.
As Jim Harbaugh continues to explore his NFL coaching prospects, it’s clear that he’s not only focused on his own future but also considering the potential contributions of those he trusts within his coaching circle. Reports suggest that Harbaugh is in Los Angeles for further discussions with the Chargers and has also interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, indicating a potential shift in his career path.
