Jets Star Is Worried About Garrett Wilson Leaving New York

Despite their lack of success regarding wins and losses, the New York Jets have a lot of excellent building blocks on their roster. While most of them are on the defensive side of the ball, there are a few standout performers on offense as well.

One of those stars is wide receiver Garrett Wilson. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft has been excellent in his first two seasons as a pro. He is only the 15th player in league history to reach the 1,000-yard plateau in his first two seasons.

That is a testament to how talented he is as the Jets have not given him much to work with. The quarterback situation has been abysmal, as Wilson has caught passes from Zach Wilson, Mike White, Joe Flacco, Tim Boyle, Trevor Siemian and Chris Streveler. The team had hoped Aaron Rodgers would solve those woes but his first season with the team lasted four plays.

Wilson has not been shy when sharing his opinion about losing. He hates it more than he likes winning, so you know the first two seasons in the NFL have been tough on him from that perspective.

“Everyone knows I hate losing. That started when I was zero. I hate losing. You love winning but then it’s like the losing ain’t that bad but you love winning. You gotta choose one side and I feel like I’m on the side of I just hate losing,” Wilson said.

That has led to some questions about how long his tenure in New York will last. If the Jets don’t turn things around, is there a chance that Wilson can leave when his contract is up or ask for a trade before then? One veteran on the team believes it is possible.

Linebacker C.J. Mosley, when talking to Rich Cimini of ESPN, admitted as much. There is a level of concern that Wilson could get fed up to the point he has a desire to leave the team and play elsewhere.

“I mean, that’s a real thing, so it’s definitely not a ‘no’ answer. Can it happen? Yes, but do I think it will? That depends on the people in this room, in this building,” Mosley said to Cimini.

The people in the building need to start showing signs of things turning around, otherwise the odds of losing their star receiver will increase. Wilson knows things need to be better and he has not shied away from taking accountability for the team’s performance, showing great leadership. However, even he is unsure of how things will unfold down the road.

“I don’t know what the future holds,” Wilson exclusively told ESPN. “I know I’m here for four or five years and I’m going to do my part to try and make this thing turn over as far as what it’s been up to this point. We have to fix it, we have to play better, we have to win games. We have to do a lot of things better, and I’m a main proponent of that. I’ve got to do my part.” (H/T Heavy)

The four or five years Wilson references is the length of his rookie contract. That is essentially how long the Jets have to show that they can turn things around and become winners, otherwise Wilson will be planning his exit from the franchise.
