Jacksonville Jaguars’ general manager, Trent Baalke, faces some critical decisions this offseason, and one of the most significant revolves around the future of star edge rusher, Josh Allen, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Baalke, however, has provided some assurance that should excite Jaguars fans.
“Josh Allen is going to be a Jaguar next year.”
The team is keen on retaining Josh Allen in the long term, but public knowledge about contract negotiations has been limited. In the 2023 season, Allen played under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, earning just under $10.9 million.
As the 2024 season approaches, the Jaguars have the option to place the franchise tag on Allen, granting them the right of first refusal if he receives an offer from another team. Ideally, both parties would prefer to agree on a long-term contract before resorting to the franchise tag. Nevertheless, the franchise tag ensures that Jacksonville retains their defensive star for another season.
Should the Jaguars apply the franchise tag without reaching a contract agreement, Josh Allen is projected to earn over $20 million in the upcoming season and would once again become a free agent the following year.
Despite the contractual uncertainty, Josh Allen had a stellar year in 2023, setting a franchise record for the Jaguars with 17.5 sacks, the highest in a single season by a Jaguar. He also contributed with 33 quarterback hits and forced two fumbles, showcasing his versatility with his second career interception.
Moreover, Allen’s consistency throughout his career is noteworthy. Except for the 2020 season when he played eight games, he appeared in nearly every game in his other four seasons, maintaining an average of over 10.5 sacks and 48 tackles per year, earning two Pro Bowl selections along the way.
Josh Allen is anticipated to secure a contract spanning four years and worth approximately $100 million. Whether it’s the Jaguars or another team remains uncertain, but Jacksonville is optimistic about having another year to negotiate with their star edge rusher.
