Jaguars’ GM Speaks On Trevor Lawrence’s Contract Status

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence just completed his third NFL season, meaning he will be eligible for a contract extension this offseason.

Jaguars general manager Trent Ballke spoke about Lawrence’s status this week and left little doubt that the team will eventually reach common ground with Lawrence on a long-term deal.

“As far as Trevor and the long-term relationship with this team, there’s no doubt in that,” Baalke said, via the Jaguars’ official YouTube account. “We’re going to get something done at the appropriate time.”

When that appropriate time is will be anyone’s guess.

Again, Jacksonville can strike a new deal with Lawrence as early as this offseason, but he still has another year remaining on his deal. Plus, the Jags can also exercise Lawrence’s fifth-year option for 2025, meaning they can technically have him under team control for two more seasons.

Lawrence is actually coming off of a rather disappointing 2023 campaign in which he threw for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while completing 65.6 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 88.5, but Baalke does not seem too concerned about the signal-caller’s recent struggles.

“I think Trevor had another learning year, right? Like we all do when we’re a third-year guy in this league,” Baalke said. “I think there are some areas he made great strides in. You look at this season, one thing we’ve got to do is we’ve got to — two things, it works both ways — we’ve got to do a better job of keeping him safe and protected and he’s got to do a better job of protecting himself.”

Baalke also noted that Lawrence dealt with a myriad of injury issues this season which inhibited his performance.

We’ll see if Trevor Lawrence can bounce back in 2024, and maybe with a fresh new contract to boot.
