Packers Urged To Pursue Major Defensive Piece In Free Agency

Geno Stone

The Green Bay Packers will likely need to address their secondary this offseason, and Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus sees a potential free-agent target for the club: Baltimore Ravens safety Geno Stone.

McGuinness qualifies the Packers’ interest in Stone by saying they may lose fellow safety Darnell Savage to free agency, which would open the door for them to sign Stone.

Stone broke out with the Ravens this season, racking up 68 tackles, seven interceptions and nine passes defended. In spite of his big numbers, McGuinness notes that he probably won’t land a very lucrative deal, which could make him an affordable option for a team like Green Bay.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Iowa, was selected by Baltimore in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He only played in two games during his rookie campaign, but the following year, Stone appeared in 15 contests, logging 21 tackles and a pick in a very limited role.

Stone’s playing time expanded in 2022, when he participated in every game and finished with 38 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Packers’ passing defense posted some strange numbers this season. While it ranked an impressive ninth in yards allowed, it finished just 25th in opponent passer rating. It also surrendered 7.3 yards per completion, which ranked in the bottom half of the league.

Overall, Green Bay’s defense was pretty mediocre during the regular season, ranking 17th in the NFL.

Regardless, the Packers have been red-hot, as they closed out the season by going 6-2 over their last eight games to snare the final Wild Card spot in the NFC. They then proceeded to rout the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Green Bay will face the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round on Saturday.
