Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton was seen having a heated discussion with quarterback Russell Wilson during Saturday night’s loss to the Detroit Lions, which has prompted more speculation about the state of their relationship.

However, Payton said this week that he and Wilson “have a great relationship” and that he would not be going into any more detail about it.

“Nothing more to share,’’ Payton said, via Mike Klis of 9 News. “It’s certainly in-game intensity, heat of the moment all those things but nothing more to add.”

The Broncos had previously been playing some terrific football, as they rebounded from a 1-5 start by reeling off five straight wins and winning six of seven games overall heading into the Lions matchup. As a result, Denver had miraculously worked itself back into the AFC playoff conversation.

However, the Broncos laid a stinker against the Lions, getting hammered by a score of 42-17. Wilson did not exactly put forth his best performance in the loss, going 18-for-32 with 223 yards and a touchdown.

On the season overall, Wilson has thrown for 2,832 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 66.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 97.5.

While Wilson’s numbers look solid, there has been rumored tension between him and Payton all season long. Payton is in his first year as Broncos head coach.

Denver initially acquired Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks back in March 2022 with the expectation that the veteran would transform the franchise.

Instead, Wilson struggled mightily in his debut campaign in the Mile High City, totaling 16 passing touchdowns and 11 picks in what was the worst season of his NFL career.

He has certainly rebounded this year, but questions about his future with the Broncos still remain. It should be noted that Russell Wilson signed a massive $245 contract extension with Denver upon being traded to the club.

The Broncos are 7-7 and will take on the New England Patriots next Sunday.
