Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott put together the best season of his career in 2023. For a large portion of the campaign, he was in the running for the MVP award, playing at a high level and helping lead the team to an NFC East title.
He promised he would cut down on his turnovers and he did that, throwing only nine interceptions in 17 games. Prescott led the NFL with 410 completions and 36 touchdowns, completing a career-high 69.5 percent of his passes for 4,516 yards.
It was a special season for the former fourth-round pick, but it feels like his future is as cloudy as ever. That is because the team suffered yet another embarrassing playoff loss, this time at home as the No. 2 seed.

The Cowboys hosted the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium during Super Wild Card Weekend. Oddsmakers thought they had the upper hand, being installed as 7.5-point favorites, the second biggest of the weekend.
No one told the Packers that, as they went into Dallas and destroyed the Cowboys, winning 48-32. Prescott’s stats look solid enough in the box score, but there is a lot of garbage time production in there. He also threw two interceptions, one of which was returned as a touchdown to kill all of his team’s momentum.
After the loss, speculation began running rampant about the future of head coach Mike McCarthy. But, David Helman of FOX Sports believes that Prescott’s future with the team could also be in jeopardy.
“I don’t think anything’s off the table after this [regarding Mike McCarthy’s future]. Personally, I’m more interested in the Dak situation. His current deal is going to cripple their cap in 2024. He had a career year. And yet, how does this inspire any confidence whatsoever moving forward.” (H/T Heavy)

The Cowboys are in a particularly tough spot because Prescott’s cap hit for the 2024 season is massive at $59.4 million. An extension almost needs to happen to help lower that number otherwise operating to upgrade the roster will be virtually impossible.
Even if the organization doesn’t plan on keeping Prescott as the starter moving forward, a new deal has to be worked out for salary cap purposes. Heading into the final season of a four-year, $160 million contract, the Cowboys have a major decision to make that will impact their franchise for years to come.
