Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is advocating for some modifications to the transfer portal system. While he himself has utilized the portal for player transfers, he has reservations about the current rules that allow players to leave a program just a year after committing to it.

In a recent quote, Sanders talked about the rule and revealed his thoughts about it.

“What I think it should be, it should always be if your coach leaves, you can leave. If your coach leaves you can leave. Other than that, we’ve got to have some more stick-to-itiveness, because now, this is what you’re dealing with.”

Sanders has openly acknowledged his preference for recruiting players from the portal who have prior college-level experience. He values their on-field experience and believes it can benefit his team.

His main concern is the lack of commitment from players to stick with a program, especially when a coach is firmly established at a school. However, Sanders also recognizes that unforeseen circumstances can arise, forcing players to seek transfers.

Deion Sanders acknowledges that the transfer portal has opened up a new era in college sports, and reversing these changes may be challenging, akin to closing Pandora’s box. Colorado has benefitted from the rule though.
