Bill Belichick Reportedly Brutally Turned Down Eagles’ Interest

Following their Super Wild Card Weekend loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there were some rumors that the Philadelphia Eagles could move on from head coach Nick Sirianni. After helping lead the team to the Super Bowl last season, Sirianni was on the hot seat after overseeing a tough late season collapse.

After starting the season 10-1, the Eagles limped into the playoffs, losing five out of six games. They didn’t look like a team that had much interest in being in Tampa Bay for a playoff game, losing 32-9.

Moving on from a head coach for one bad stretch would seem a bit overzealous, but the last two months of the season were a struggle for the Eagles. Sirianni looked overmatched as head coach, unable to find any way to stop the bleeding.

As a result, Philadelphia reportedly did check in on some head coaching candidates. One person they showed an interest in was Bill Belichick, who parted ways with the New England Patriots.

However, it takes two to tango. While the Eagles were interested in him, Belichick had no interest in the Eagles. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk provided an update on the situation, including their NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, also showing an interest.

“One league source explained it, Belichick is believed to be done with ‘big-market media,’ making him more inclined to go to a place like Atlanta than Dallas or Philadelphia. As to the Cowboys and the Eagles, there’s also a belief in some league circles that both teams expressed interest in Belichick, that Belichick didn’t reciprocate, and that those teams then decided to stick with their current coaches.”

Had Belichick wanted to go to the NFC East, both teams would have seemingly fired their current head coaches for him. It would be hard to argue against that move, as Belichick is the greatest coach in NFL history in many people’s eyes.

In a recent update from over the weekend, Florio said that it looks like Sirianni is going to stay with the Eagles. He will have his work cut out for him, as his team wasn’t close to replicating their success from their NFC Championship run the season before.
