Even the best players in the NBA need help. No man can drag a team to an NBA championship on their own. The league’s superstars need a strong supporting cast around them.
Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors could use some help. This team is having a drastically underwhelming 2023-24 season. Curry’s play has been strong. Perhaps he’s in decline, but he’s still a star-caliber producer. Unfortunately, the rest of this roster is not living up to expectations.
So, the Warriors are a prime candidate to make a major trade. This team could go in several directions – the Warriors could prioritize the future. Alternatively, they could pair Curry with a star. Here are three star players that we think they should take a look at.
Dejounte Murray
Murray has emerged as a popular target for the Warriors. To some, it doesn’t make sense. The Warriors already have enough talent in their backcourt, don’t they?
Well, Chris Paul is nearing retirement. Moreover, Klay Thompson is no longer a player that you build around. The Warriors shouldn’t hesitate to reduce his role. So, the only relevant question is whether Murray is a good fit alongside Steph Curry.
We think he is. Murray can be ball-dominant, but Curry is the most dangerous off-ball threat in basketball. Meanwhile, when he’s engaged, Murray is an elite point-of-attack defender. His wingspan compensates for Curry’s lack of size. Still, the Warriors may prefer to pair Curry with a forward. If so, they’ll prefer this next target.
Pascal Siakam
Murray has emerged as a popular target for the Warriors. On the other hand, Siakam has been a popular target for quite some time for this team. That makes sense – he’d be a perfectly suitable acquisition for this roster.
After all, Siakam is a heady playmaker who’s always been a plus passer. That ought to endear him to Steve Kerr. Siakam should be a hand-in-glove fit with this team’s motion system.
Moreover, the Raptors just started rebuilding. They’d likely ask for Jonathan Kuminga in exchange for Siakam. With that said, if the Warriors are willing to attach enough draft capital to a deal, they may be able to keep both forwards. On the other hand, the Raptors are notoriously difficult to deal with. Is there a team that might be easier to negotiate with?
Mikal Bridges
We don’t know if the Nets are easy to deal with. We also don’t know if they’d be willing to move Bridges. Recent reports have suggested that moving Bridges is not something this team is especially eager to do.
Fair. The Nets owe control of their draft to the Houston Rockets through to 2027. Losing will not be palpable for this team. With that said, the Nets are losing anyway. Why not prioritize their future?
After all, the Warriors have a lot of future-focused assets to part with. They have most of their own draft picks and an intriguing collection of young players. Still, they should be willing to part with some of them to land Bridges. After all, Curry could sure use the help.
