Report: Doc Rivers Becomes New Bucks Head Coach

Doc Rivers is the new head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, according to multiple NBA reports.

The Bucks fired Adrian Griffin and are replacing him with Rivers, who is leaving ESPN for the Milwaukee job.

Rivers began to serve as an informal consultant to Griffin at the behest of the Bucks in December, according to The Athletic. Milwaukee is in second place in the Eastern Conference standings. The team has a record of 30-13.

Rivers, 62, has coached the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers. He won the 2008 championship with the Celtics over the Los Angeles Lakers and was named one of the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history.

During the 1999-00 season, Rivers was named the Coach of the Year with the Magic.

Rivers has a record of 1,097-763 in the regular season. The Chicago native is 111-104 in the playoffs. The former NBA guard last coached for the Sixers in 2022-23. Philadelphia went 54-28 in the regular season but lost to the Celtics in the second round of the playoffs in seven games.

The Bucks are expected to compete for a championship since they have Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez. The team is second in the NBA in points per game but 25th in points per game allowed.

Rivers will be asked to help the Bucks become an elite defense again. It will certainly take the players on the roster time to adjust to Rivers’ coaching style.
