Kings Refuse To Include Keegan Murray In Trade Talks

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly decided against pursuing Toronto Raptors star Pascal Siakam ahead of the NBA trade deadline, mainly due to their reluctance to part with young talent Keegan Murray.

Sportsnet’s Michael Grange reports that the Kings are committed to retaining Murray, a promising second-year forward. Additionally, with substantial max contracts already allocated to Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox, the Kings are not inclined to offer Siakam a max contract. This decision effectively rules out retaining Siakam, who is approaching free agency.

Having already traded OG Anunoby to the New York Knicks, the Raptors are navigating Siakam’s impending free agency. While Siakam is a seasoned All-Star expected to command a max deal, he doesn’t align with the timeline of the team’s emerging talents like Scottie Barnes.

Shams Charania of The Athletic has reported that the Kings have officially withdrawn from discussions regarding Siakam. Negotiations between the Kings and Raptors have concluded despite the fluid nature of trade talks.

Murray, selected fourth overall in the 2022 NBA draft, has been a critical player for Sacramento, averaging 15.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game in his second year. Although his three-point shooting percentage has dipped from the previous season, he remains a reliable offensive contributor and the team’s third-highest scorer.

Siakam is currently the more accomplished player, but he comes with a higher price tag and is six years older than Murray. The Kings, eager to compete, are hesitant to sacrifice an emerging talent like Murray, preferring to let their current core develop together.

This decision aligns with the Kings’ current standing. Positioned fourth in the Western Conference and only four games behind the Denver Nuggets for the top seed, they have little reason to disrupt their current momentum. The team’s cohesive progress and shared developmental trajectory appear to be a priority over making a high-stakes trade.
