Mavs Land Wizards’ Kyle Kuzma In Bold Trade Proposal

Kyle Kuzma
NBA Analysis Network

In the NBA, you’re only as good as your best player. You won’t compete for an NBA title if you don’t have a true franchise player. This is a rule that, historically, has had very few exceptions.

The Washington Wizards have learned this lesson the hard way. They spent years trying to win with Bradley Beal as their best player. This summer, they finally conceded defeat. Now, they’re one of the worst teams in the NBA.

That’s not a surprise. As of now, the best player on this team is Kyle Kuzma. He’s talented, but he isn’t fit to lead an NBA team.

Could the Wizards send him to the Dallas Mavericks?

NBA Trade Proposal: Dallas Mavericks Land Washington Wizards’ Kyle Kuzma

Washington Wizards Receive: C Richaun Holmes, F/C Maxi Kleber, G Jaden Hardy, 2027 First-Round Pick (Lottery Protected – DAL)

Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Kyle Kuzma

Even one superstar isn’t enough. That star is going to need a co-star. A team may try to build their whole system around one player. In all likelihood, that will only get them so far.

The Dallas Mavericks have learned that lesson the hard way. Sure, they made a Western Conference Finals run with a heliocentric offense built around Luka Doncic. In time, it became obvious to them that unless Doncic had a co-star, they wouldn’t get any further.

Problem solved. Last year, the Mavericks acquired Kyrie Irving. In 2023-24, they look like dark horse title contenders. Could acquiring Kuzma put them over the top?

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

The Mavericks did well to add Irving. Yet, this offense could still use another wrinkle. Sometimes, it feels like Doncic and Irving are taking turns. This team could use a connective tissue.

Kuzma can handle that role. He’s a competent playmaker. Kuzma can also create his own shot in a pinch – he’s a perfect third option. Finally, he’s a solid defender who gives Dallas some needed size in their frontcourt.

He’s also worth this cost for Dallas. They don’t seem likely to commit developmental reps to Hardy, and they scarcely even play Holmes. Kuzma will make them a better team in 2023-24.

Should the Wizards part with him?

Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal

It’s been reported that Washington is seeking several first-round picks for Kuzma. We’ll see about that. With a long-term, expensive contract, Kuzma’s trade market may be limited.

A protected first feels more realistic. That’s what Washington is getting here. If nothing else, they’ll benefit from getting Kuzma off of the books.

Yet, that’s not all that they’re doing here. Taking a flyer on Hardy is well worth their time. The Wizards could make him a featured player in their offense – what have they got to lose? This team should be looking to maximize their lottery odds – that’s the safest way to land a franchise player.
