Recently, there have been a lot of discussions about where New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson ranks amongst other players in the NBA. While some people are pining for Brunson as a star, others believe that he is too small to be the 1A option on a contending team.

The Villanova product has been hearing that throughout his entire life and uses it as motivation on the court. He has been told from grade school that he is too small or not athletic enough to succeed. That hasn’t stopped him from rejuvenating the Knicks during his time there, helping turn things around with sustained success.

While Brunson may not be a 1A star in some people’s eyes, he is a superstar in the making. What he has accomplished since taking over as the starting point guard in New York has been incredible.

He took his game to another level during the playoffs, helping the Knicks defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round before falling to the Miami Heat in the semifinals. This season, he has taken his game to yet another level.

After putting up career-highs during the 2022-23 season, Brunson is doing it again in the 2023-24 campaign. He is scoring 26.1 points per game on an efficient .480/.459/.804 shooting split with an effective field goal percentage of 55.6 and a true shooting percentage of 59.6.

In addition to the shooting numbers, Brunson is grabbing 4.0 rebounds per game to go along with 5.9 assists and 1.1 steals. Most importantly, despite some bumps and bruises along the way, Brunson has played in and started all 29 games for the team this season.

In the process, he has made some NBA history. According to KnicksMuse on X, formerly Twitter, Brunson is the first guard in NBA history to average 26+ points per game and make 45+ percent of his 3-point attempts through the first 29 games of a season.

What makes his 3-point shooting even more impressive is that he is doing it at high volume. Brunson attempts 6.4 3-pointers per game and makes 2.9, making 85 out of 185 total attempts. He is 16th in the NBA in 3-pointers made and 24th in attempts as he is putting together a special shooting season.

It should result in Brunson’s first career All-Star nomination and if he can keep it up, a spot on an All-NBA Team should be within reach as well. While the personal accolades are impressive, Brunson is hoping that it continues to translate to team success on the court, where the Knicks are 17-12 despite a daunting schedule to this point.
