Report: Celtics Monitoring Kelly Olynyk Trade With Jazz

The Boston Celtics are monitoring a potential Kelly Olynyk trade with the Utah Jazz, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

The Jazz are expected to trade Olynyk before the trade deadline in February since they are in rebuild mode.

“League sources say Boston is among the teams that is monitoring Utah’s Kelly Olynyk in advance of a potential trade pursuit,” Stein wrote. “Olynyk, as covered here before my Showcase trip, is one of a number of Jazz veterans known to be available and the Celtics obviously know him well.”

Olynyk is averaging 7.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.3 blocks this season while shooting 54.9% from the field, 41.8% from beyond the arc and 88.9% from the free-throw line. He’s making $12.2 million and becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season ends.

Olynyk began his career with the Celtics. He appeared in 278 games with Boston from 2013-14 to 2016-17 and averaged 9.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.5 blocks while shooting 47.7% overall, 36.8% from 3 and 74.3% from the foul line.

The Celtics have the best record in the NBA at 23-6. They will be aggressive in targeting bench help, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

Olynyk has career averages of 10.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocks with the Celtics, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons and Jazz. It will be fascinating to see if the Gonzaga product gets traded and where he lands if he’s moved.
