Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd told NBA reporters that star point guard Kyrie Irving is wearing a protective boot and using crutches after suffering a right heel contusion on December 8 against the Portland Trail Blazers.

It’s unknown when Irving will return to the Mavericks’ lineup.

The Mavericks are going to play it safe with Irving. They have enough firepower on offense to win games without Uncle Drew.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Kyrie Irving, Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks Updates

Irving is averaging 23.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists on the season for the Mavericks while shooting 47.1% from the floor, 38.4% from 3 and 90.3% from the foul line. The future Hall of Famer signed a three-year, $126 million contract with Dallas in July.

The Mavericks improved to 15-8 after beating the Los Angeles Lakers on December 12. Dallas looks like a legitimate title contender with superstar Luka Doncic leading the way.

Doncic and Irving are surrounded by great role players in Grant Williams, Dante Exum, Tim Hardaway Jr., Dereck Lively II, Josh Green and Derrick Jones Jr.

Before he got hurt versus the Blazers, Irving spoke with NBA reporter Grant Afseth of Sports Illustrated about Doncic, who is putting up outstanding numbers for the Mavericks this season.

“Insane, bro. I’ve been with some of the best ever, and to see it up close is one thing, but to experience it as a teammate is a whole different world to be in because you’re watching it, and it looks so easy,” Irving said of Doncic. “But you know, it’s a lot of hours put in the gym for that guy—a lot of confidence and ultimately us as teammates. We just want to be there for him and support him. Like if you’re having a good night, a great night like that, man, keep feeding him, and he kept going, and we weren’t playing around tonight, so it felt good, for sure.”

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Kyrie Irving, Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks Updates

The Mavericks haven’t won a title since 2011. It will be interesting to see if Doncic and Irving can lead Dallas to the championship this season.
