The NFL fined Houston Texans defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr. $8,923 after he was called for roughing the passer on a low hit against Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen during Sunday’s season opener.
The hit came in the third quarter of Buffalo’s 36-31 win at NRG Stadium. Officials flagged Edwards as Allen released an incomplete pass, and the Bills took the 15-yard penalty instead of a shorter holding call.
That extra yardage helped Buffalo move into field-goal range. Tyler Bass converted, giving the Bills a 27-21 lead at the time.
Edwards was not the only Texans player to lose money after the game. League records showed three teammates also drew fines for uniform violations.
Running back David Montgomery was docked $11,491 for an unauthorized logo on his cleats. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair was fined $11,492 for an unauthorized message on his eye black. Offensive tackle Trent Brown was charged $5,971 for socks that did not cover his lower leg.
The financial penalties piled up on a day when Houston’s defense could not contain Allen. The Bills quarterback finished 20 of 29 for 334 yards and two touchdown passes. He added two rushing scores on six carries for 23 yards and posted a 130.5 passer rating.
Allen accounted for every Buffalo touchdown. Tight end Dalton Kincaid caught five passes for 130 yards, and new wide receiver DJ Moore added five catches for 100 yards and a score in his Bills debut.
The performance ended a long drought. Buffalo had not won in Houston since 2006. Allen himself had gone 0-4 as a starter in the city before Sunday.
Late in the fourth quarter, with the Texans ahead 31-30, Allen drove the Bills 96 yards. He hit Joshua Palmer for a 34-yard touchdown with 1:36 left. A two-point try failed, but Buffalo’s defense then forced a fumble to seal the win.
Buffalo now turns around quickly. The Bills host the Detroit Lions on Thursday night in the first regular-season game at the new stadium.
Detroit needed overtime to beat the New Orleans Saints 31-30 after blowing a 21-0 second-half lead. The Lions also placed starting safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph on the reserve/physically unable to perform list to open the season.
The league’s listed first-offense fine for roughing the passer this season is $17,911, but Edwards received a lower figure. Players can appeal, and the NFL often adjusts amounts after review.
Fines collected by the league typically go to the Professional Athletes Foundation and the NFL Foundation to support former players and health and safety programs.
Edwards, a veteran interior lineman, will have a chance to appeal. For now, the penalty is another reminder of how closely the league watches hits on quarterbacks, especially when they help decide field position in a close game.
