The Houston Astros paused the grind of a late-September pennant race on Tuesday to mark a personal milestone for one of their own.
Carlos Correa turned 32 years old, and the club used its social channels to send a simple, festive happy birthday greeting to the injured infielder who has been missing from the lineup since early May.
The birthday post itself was brief and warm: “¡Felicidades, Carlos!” accompanied by a cake emoji. It arrived on a day already crowded with team celebrations.
Jeremy Peña shares the same birthday, and catcher Yainer Diaz marked his own a day earlier. The coincidence of mid-September birthdays gave the club a chance to acknowledge players even while the standings demanded daily attention.
Correa has not appeared in a game since the first week of that month and will not return this season, even if Houston reaches October.
The timing of his absence has been especially noticeable because the Astros sit one game behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West with a week remaining. Two games against the Seattle Mariners and a four-game series with the Athletics still stand between Houston and the finish line.
How the stretch run might have looked with a healthy Correa at shortstop or third base is one of those counterfactuals that linger around a tight division race.
Before the injury, Correa had been productive in limited action. In 32 games, he posted a 1.3 bWAR, three home runs, eight doubles and 22 runs scored.
Those numbers offered a reminder of the player Houston acquired at last year’s trade deadline after four seasons in Minnesota.
Correa originally spent seven years with the Astros, helping deliver the 2017 World Series title, collecting three All-Star selections and a Gold Glove along the way.
Across a 12-year career, he has 203 home runs, 273 doubles and a 124 OPS+ in 4,838 at-bats. He remains under a six-year, $200 million contract that runs through 2028.
Correa’s absence has forced Houston to lean on other infield pieces through the dog days and into the final week. Whether that group can hold or overtake Texas will be settled on the field, not in a hypothetical lineup that includes a healthy Correa.
For one afternoon, though, the organization set the standings aside long enough to note that one of its most familiar faces had added another year.
The message was personal rather than tactical, a small acknowledgment that even in the last week of a tight race the calendar still belongs to the people wearing the uniform.
