The Charlotte Hornets’ plans for Coby White have already been interrupted.
The Hornets announced Monday that the guard suffered a left calf strain in training camp and will miss the entire preseason, with further updates to come only as appropriate.
White is the second projected starter, and the third rotation player, to go down with a soft-tissue injury before opening night.
Forward Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams both strained hamstrings during offseason workouts and are not expected to be reevaluated until the first week of the regular season.
For a club that spent the summer trying to stabilize its backcourt and wings, the early injury list is already crowding the depth chart.
The timing is awkward for White, who re-signed with Charlotte this summer on a three-year, $74 million deal as an unrestricted free agent.
The 26-year-old North Carolina native arrived from Chicago in February after six and a half seasons with the Bulls. That trade was supposed to include three second-round picks.
A physical uncovered a left calf injury that would keep him out for several more weeks, and the clubs amended the package, dropping one of those picks. He then missed six games in February because of that same calf.
Last season was already a test of durability. White dealt with calf strains in both legs, most notably a right calf strain in August 2025, and played only 50 games, a career low.
When he was available he still produced, averaging 17.4 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 25.0 minutes, shooting 44.6 percent from the field, 36.2 percent from three and 81.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Charlotte signed him in part because that scoring and secondary playmaking fit next to LaMelo Ball when both are healthy. Another calf setback, this one on the left side again, raises the same question the physical raised in February: how much of that production the Hornets can actually count on.
Missing the preseason is not the same as missing the regular season, and the team has not put a return date on White.
Training camp and exhibition games are when new teammates sort roles, though, and White will have to do that work later, or not at all, depending on how the strain responds. The Hornets have been careful with language, promising only that they will update his status when it makes sense.
The same announcement included a smaller note on two-way guard Kylan Boswell, the undrafted Illinois product, who is dealing with a right knee injury.
He is expected to return to basketball activity before the G League season starts in late October. For Charlotte, that is a roster footnote. White’s calf is the one that changes how the rotation looks when the games start to count.
