The Green Bay Packers released offensive lineman Cordell Volson from the practice squad on Tuesday, ending a brief stay that began only 12 days earlier, the team announced.
Running back Damon Bankston was also let go in the same set of moves announced by general manager Brian Gutekunst.
Volson, 28, has been in the NFL since 2022, when the Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the fourth round, 136th overall, out of North Dakota State.
At 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds, he immediately became a fixture on Cincinnati’s interior line. He played 50 regular-season games with 48 starts from 2022 through 2024, almost exclusively at left guard, and started three postseason games as well.
His rookie year was unusually stable for a mid-round lineman: he started all 16 games. He started all 17 in 2023 and 15 of 17 in 2024. Those three seasons produced more than 3,000 regular-season snaps.
The 2025 season never happened for him. A shoulder injury in training camp led the Bengals to waive him injured at final cuts; he spent the year on injured reserve and did not play.
Tennessee signed him in March 2026 to a one-year deal that included $2 million guaranteed. He worked at right guard in the preseason but was waived on Aug. 30 as the Titans kept younger options.
Green Bay brought him in for a workout after a rough Week 1 loss to Minnesota and signed him to the practice squad on Sept. 17, hoping veteran interior depth would help an offensive line under fire for pass protection.
He never reached the 53-man roster.
The Packers have since shuffled that room. They signed veteran guard Laken Tomlinson, added Mekhi Becton Sr. to the practice squad, and placed offensive lineman Zach Bako-Bewele on injured reserve with a torn right patellar tendon.
Jersey numbers shifted as well: Becton to 74 and Tomlinson to 72, the number Volson had been assigned. The release of Volson and Bankston frees practice-squad spots as Green Bay prepares for the next stretch of the schedule.
Volson’s college résumé remains the foundation of his reputation. At North Dakota State he won four FCS titles and earned first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors three times.
In the NFL, he was a durable starter early, then a player trying to reclaim a foothold after injury and two midseason roster cuts in 2026.
He is now a free agent again, with four years of starting experience and an open market still looking for interior depth.
