The New York Giants kicked off their offseason workout sessions on Tuesday afternoon, gaining a unique head start compared to most other NFL franchises. This early beginning stems directly from the recent appointment of John Harbaugh as the team’s new head coach, allowing the organization to begin building momentum sooner than usual.

Attendance at the first practice was nearly complete, with just three notable absences reported. Those missing included cornerback Paulson Adebo, newly acquired defensive tackle Sam Roberts, and star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, whose situation drew the most attention.

The Giants had anticipated Lawrence’s unavailability, as the standout player formally requested a trade just one day earlier. His move signaled a strong desire for a revised contract from the franchise that originally selected him in the draft.

Following the session, Harbaugh met with reporters, where the primary subject quickly turned to the unresolved contract matter involving Lawrence. The discussion highlighted the immediate challenges facing the new coaching staff.

This situation represents the initial significant test for Harbaugh during his time leading the Giants. Observers will closely monitor how the head coach navigates the delicate issue over the coming weeks and months.

Harbaugh expressed strong optimism about resolving the matter favorably for all parties. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to retaining their key player while suggesting the trade demand might serve as leverage in ongoing discussions.

“We’ll find out. I think the prospects are going to be high,” Harbaugh said.

“Speaking for the Giants, we want Dexter here. And I believe Dexter wants to be here.”

One of the key attractions that drew Harbaugh to the Giants position was the existing roster talent already present within the organization. This depth was viewed as providing a solid foundation for quicker success, with Lawrence standing out as a central piece of that core group.

The team’s new defensive coordinator, Dennard Wilson, has also voiced strong support for retaining Lawrence. Wilson appears enthusiastic about the opportunity to deploy such a dominant force along the defensive front in his schemes.

Securing Lawrence’s long-term future with the Giants will ultimately require reaching agreement on an updated contract. Without that resolution, bringing the player fully back into the fold could prove challenging.

Harbaugh clarified that he will not take the lead role in the contract negotiations themselves. Instead, he plans to offer input where appropriate while leaving the primary responsibilities to senior vice president of football operations Dawn Aponte and general manager Joe Schoen.

Should the decision rest solely with the head coach, he would prefer to see the entire situation concluded swiftly and without unnecessary complications. A prompt and positive outcome would allow the team to focus fully on preparations for the upcoming season.
