The New York Giants’ already battered offense took another crushing blow on Sunday when rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered what appeared to be a devastating lower-leg injury during a heated NFC East clash with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Skattebo, who had emerged as a dynamic sparkplug for the Giants amid a season plagued by injuries, crumpled to the turf in the first half after a routine tackle. Television replays briefly captured the harrowing sight of his right foot twisted at an unnatural angle, prompting Fox broadcasters to quickly cut away.

The former Arizona State star had stepped into a prominent role after starting running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. went down earlier in the year with his own injury. Skattebo wasted no time making an impact, injecting much-needed explosiveness into a Giants attack that lost its top playmaker, wide receiver Malik Nabers, to a season-ending injury.

On the field away from the injury, rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart—Skattebo’s close friend and backfield mate—couldn’t hide his anguish.

Dart was distraught as he watched his friend suffer a potentially season-ending lower leg injury, showing plenty of emotion as he shouted in anger and shook his head in disbelief.

The injury occurred with New York trailing 14-7 in the second quarter. Before the devastating play, Skattebo had already flashed his dual-threat ability, accumulating 30 total yards and a touchdown on just four touches.

Through the first seven games of his NFL career, Skattebo had established himself as the Giants’ most reliable offensive weapon. He entered the contest as the team’s leading rusher with 398 yards, ranked fourth in receiving with 189 yards, and paced the squad with six total touchdowns.

His absence leaves a gaping hole in an offense searching for consistency. The Giants, now potentially without two of their most productive skill players in Skattebo and Nabers, face an uphill battle to salvage their season.

Medical staff carted Skattebo off the field, and the team has yet to release an official update on the extent of the damage. But the visual evidence and the rookie’s promising campaign cut short painted a somber picture inside MetLife Stadium as New York continues to grapple with adversity in a bruising divisional matchup.

More news is sure to be made available about Skattebo’s injury in the near future.
