In a Week 6 contest that turned into a comeback attempt too late, the New York Giants fell 34-27 to the New Orleans Saints after trailing by as many as 24 points.

Facing a mounting deficit, head coach John Harbaugh turned to recently acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy for the first time since the team obtained him in a trade from the Minnesota Vikings.

The former first-round pick delivered an energetic spark, completing 11 of 23 passes for 243 yards with a touchdown and an interception while helping the offense mount a late push that narrowed the final margin.

Veteran starter Jameis Winston, who had already thrown two interceptions of his own before the change, watched the performance from the sideline and offered an immediate, supportive assessment afterward.

Speaking with reporters, he said, “Oh man, he was able to rally us up, and he did a great job. I’m proud of him, proud of what he did.”

The comment reflected a straightforward appreciation for McCarthy’s ability to energize the group in a difficult spot, even as the outcome remained a loss.

Winston’s own play has left his hold on the starting job uncertain. The interceptions proved costly in a game decided by a single score, adding to the questions surrounding the position.

He acknowledged that the decision for Week 7 rests with Harbaugh and the coaching staff.

“That’s him, that’s a decision that he’ll have to make,” Winston said of Harbaugh on the quarterback decision. “What I would love is to just put myself in a better position to execute. That just starts with me, things that I can control, going out there every single play, doing my very best.”

The remarks underscore a familiar pattern in Winston’s career, where strong stretches have at times been interrupted by turnovers that force coaches to reassess.

Harbaugh declined to name a starter after the game, leaving the door open to McCarthy while stopping short of any formal announcement. For Winston, the emphasis remains on the aspects of preparation and execution he can influence regardless of the outcome of that evaluation.

The sequence illustrates the fluid nature of the Giants’ quarterback situation less than a month after McCarthy’s arrival.

His productive relief appearance has generated momentum, yet Winston’s measured response keeps the focus on team progress rather than individual competition.

How the staff weighs the two options heading into the next week will determine whether the veteran retains the reins or whether the younger passer receives a fuller opportunity to build on what he showed against the Saints.
