Giants Drop Significant Injury Update on Former Top Pick

The New York Giants received an encouraging update on Monday regarding one of their most important defensive pieces.

Edge rusher Abdul Carter, the third overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, sat out practice after sustaining a hand and finger injury.

Head coach John Harbaugh quickly eased concerns, describing the issue as minor and stating that Carter is fine, with a realistic chance of returning to the field as soon as Tuesday.

Carter remains in the second year of a four-year rookie contract worth more than $45 million. The organization has largely enjoyed a clean bill of health through the early stages of training camp, and this latest development continues that trend.

While any absence for a high-drafted pass rusher draws attention, the measured tone from the coaching staff suggests this particular setback will not linger.

Last season brought a steep learning curve for the former Penn State standout. Despite arriving with the profile of a future star and early consideration as a Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate, Carter’s first year in the league was marked by inconsistency and off-field missteps.

He was disciplined twice in a three-week span, first for sleeping through a walk-through practice and later for missing a team meeting. Those incidents led to limited playing time in key moments and left a mixed impression on both the coaching staff and the fan base.

He ultimately finished fifth in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, a respectable showing that still fell short of the lofty expectations that accompanied his selection.

As Carter begins his second campaign, the focus has shifted toward maturity and consistency. Observers have noted early signs of progress in training camp, pointing to improved technique, better recognition of blocking schemes, and a more professional approach to the daily demands of the NFL.

At 6-foot-4 and roughly 250 pounds, he possesses the physical tools to become a disruptive force along the edge. The Giants are counting on that potential to translate into sustained production this fall.

Monday’s injury, while inconvenient, appears to represent little more than a temporary interruption. With Harbaugh expressing confidence in a rapid return, Carter should soon rejoin his teammates and continue the process of proving that Year 2 will look markedly different from his uneven debut.

For a franchise looking to build a more formidable defense, keeping its top young pass rusher healthy and engaged remains a priority.
