The New York Giants entered training camp with several areas of their roster under scrutiny, but few positions have drawn as much quiet concern as the defensive tackle group.

According to reporting from Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the unit has shown some encouraging early signs, yet still ranks among the spots the organization is most likely to address before the regular season begins.

Second-year defensive tackle Darius Alexander has stood out in the opening weeks of camp. His consistent play has helped lock in a role next to the veteran pair of DJ Reader and Shelby Harris, who form the experienced core of the group.

Behind them, the competition for backup snaps has been open and active. Leki Fotu and Josh Tupou have received the bulk of the first-team opportunities among the players battling for those supporting roles, while sixth-round rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis has largely worked with the third team.

Duggan noted that Jamison-Travis is the type of developmental prospect the Giants could eventually shift to the practice squad if roster decisions tighten.

Despite those internal developments, the overall picture remains incomplete. The Giants currently sit fifth in the waiver order, a position that gives them a reasonable chance to claim a player if a useful defensive tackle becomes available through cuts or other roster moves.

Duggan specifically identified defensive tackle as a position the team will look to upgrade ahead of the season, suggesting the coaching staff and front office view the current depth as a potential vulnerability rather than a finished product.

This outlook fits a broader pattern for the Giants as they transition under new leadership. The defensive line must generate pressure and occupy blockers if the rest of the front seven is to function effectively.

Reader and Harris bring proven veteran presence, and Alexander’s early progress offers hope that the younger contingent can contribute. Still, the lack of a clear, high-upside rotational piece beyond the top three has left the room looking thinner than ideal for a full 17-game schedule plus the physical demands of the preseason.

As the Giants shift from the isolated setting of their West Virginia camp back to New Jersey and prepare for preseason games, the evaluation process will intensify. Performances against live competition will clarify who belongs and who does not.

At the same time, the front office will keep a close watch on the waiver wire and free-agent market. Any addition would not necessarily need to be a high-profile starter. A reliable rotational tackle who can spell the veterans and maintain production on early downs could meaningfully strengthen the group.

Duggan’s assessment underscores a measured approach: the Giants are not panicking, but they are realistic. The current roster provides a foundation.

Whether that foundation proves sturdy enough, or whether an external upgrade arrives in the coming weeks, will be one of the more important questions the team answers before Week 1.
