George Pickens is settling into life with the Dallas Cowboys in a way that feels markedly different from his time in Pittsburgh, and the wide receiver has made no secret of his appreciation for the change.
Speaking with reporters during training camp in Oxnard, Pickens described a more supportive atmosphere that has allowed him to play with greater ease and focus, and Sean Deveney of Heavy.com believes that is an indication that the star pass-catcher wants to remain with the Cowboys.
The comments come as Pickens enters a pivotal contract year following a breakout 2025 season in which he recorded 93 receptions for 1,429 yards.
Asked about his comfort level in Dallas after a turbulent three-year stretch with the Steelers, where he often felt criticized by coaches and local media, Pickens pointed to the people around him.
“I’d probably just say the type of coaches and the people around. When it’s a different vibe and environment then that’s mostly what you’re seeing out of me now. Just, definitely more light-heart people,” Pickens said.
He added that the approach here feels more open-minded.
“They kind of just ask questions first, see your answer, you know what I mean? Instead of just going with their own narrative,” Pickens said. “Definitely being around the guys, too. That’s definitely my No. 1 thing always just because when you can wake up in the morning and see them and we’re going through the same thing. Just being around the whole facility.”
The positive feedback has been mutual. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer recently praised Pickens for his sharpened professionalism, noting how dialed-in the receiver has been in meetings and how motivated he appears for the season ahead. Pickens himself acknowledged growth in that area.
Beyond the culture, Pickens also offered insight into his elite route-running, which coaches have similarly lauded. He rejected the idea of a textbook perfect route, explaining that real football demands constant adjustment.
“People don’t understand, route-running is more spatial awareness, so you’re not really running a route—you see routes on Instagram and it looks really cool, but it is just him and his trainer. When football is 11 guys on the field,” he said. “So routes, honestly, are more spatial awareness than anything, so if you’re going to get man coverage, you sometimes have to lean on the defender to save space. It’s all spatial awareness. The cleanest route is never going to be a thing in my book—it’s just going to be me, open.”
With CeeDee Lamb already locked into a substantial long-term deal, the Cowboys face a difficult decision on whether they can retain both receivers beyond this season.
Pickens has made clear he would welcome the chance to stay. As training camp continues and the offense looks to build on its high-powered reputation, his words suggest a player who has found a home and is eager to prove it on the field.
