Dave Bautista, the six-time world champion known throughout WWE as Batista, has made it clear that his in-ring days are permanently behind him. The WWE Hall of Famer has shut down any speculation about a possible return, even as other legendary figures have occasionally stepped back under the bright lights after long absences.
Many wrestling stars have found it difficult to stay away forever. Icons such as Ric Flair, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and Shawn Michaels all chose to end extended retirements for at least one more high-profile contest. In Austin’s situation, his triumph over Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38 represented his first match in nearly two decades.
Batista himself stepped away after a decisive defeat to Triple H at WrestleMania 35. That bout marked his first appearance inside the ropes in five years. Given that history, some fans have wondered whether the powerful competitor might eventually reverse course and chase one final victory.
Despite remaining in outstanding physical condition, the man nicknamed “The Animal” has left no doubt about his feelings. During a recent interview he stressed that he holds absolutely no interest in competing again.
“It’s hard to walk away,” Bautista said. “Most people don’t walk away. And this is why…it’s almost a running joke when wrestlers retire, because they never retire. They retire like five times. And there’s people, they always thought throughout these years that I would come back, I would come out of retirement, and I told them over and over I won’t. I had a (expletive) storybook ending and I won’t (expletive) on it.”
He went even further, stating that he would choose hard physical work and financial hardship over any return to professional wrestling.
“I will never wrestle again…I just had the best…I went out the way I wanted, with the guy I wanted to go out with,” he said. “It’s never going to be that good again and I just won’t tarnish it. And I feel so good about it. Like, I’m so proud of the way I went out.”
A thriving career in Hollywood has made the decision easier for him. As a major star of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Bautista is already lined up for prominent roles in two major 2027 releases, Road House 2 and Highlander.
His earlier exits from WWE in 2010 and 2014 were marked by frustration over creative direction. Those departures left a lingering sense of unfinished business. When he finally came back in 2019, the storyline centered on his former Evolution mentor, Triple H, allowing the rivalry to reach a natural conclusion.
Even after five years away from competition, Batista performed with the poise and intensity of a seasoned veteran during his loss to Triple H. He has repeatedly expressed satisfaction with that final chapter, noting that it felt appropriate for The Game to be the one who closed the book on his wrestling career.
Shawn Michaels once made a different choice, returning in 2018 after what many considered a perfect farewell against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26. Batista has no intention of repeating that path.
He believes the memorable send-off he shared with Triple H cannot be improved upon, and therefore remains firmly committed to staying retired.
