Former Tulane Green Wave superstar Mario Williams is a free agent again after the Los Angeles Rams terminated his contract.
The Rams have waived the former Tulane wide receiver from injured reserve with an injury settlement, ending his second stint with the club in as many years.
Williams suffered a hamstring injury in the preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. The team needed the roster spot and moved on, just as it had in August 2025 after a similar preseason setback.
For Green Wave fans, the news lands with mixed feelings. Williams never played a regular-season snap in the NFL, but his one year in New Orleans remains one of the more productive transfer seasons in recent Tulane history.
Williams arrived from USC in January 2024 after earlier stops at Oklahoma and with the Trojans. In 14 games (10 starts) he led the Wave with 60 receptions for 1,031 yards and six touchdowns. That 17.2 yards-per-catch average made him a genuine vertical threat.
He became just the eighth different Tulane receiver to post a 1,000-yard season. He led the American Athletic Conference in receiving yards and earned second-team All-AAC honors, plus Louisiana Sports Writers Association Newcomer of the Year.
He topped 100 yards four times, including 128 against Kansas State and 130 against Memphis. Two-touchdown games against South Florida and scores against North Texas, Memphis, and Army showed he could produce when the offense featured him.
The production was efficient and complementary to Tulane’s identity that season: a transfer who immediately became the top target.
At 5-foot-9 and 186 pounds, Williams was never going to be a traditional outside “X” receiver in the NFL.
His game was slot work, yards after catch, and return ability—skills that flashed in limited preseason action with the Rams in 2025 (two catches for 46 yards and a touchdown plus kick-return work). Injuries twice cut those chances short.
Undrafted receivers live on thin margins. A few weeks on the shelf often ends the experiment. Williams now looks to get healthy and find another opportunity.
For Tulane, the 2024 tape still stands: a transfer who delivered a 1,000-yard, All-Conference season and gave the Green Wave a reliable playmaker for one memorable year. That résumé remains the strongest part of his football story so far.
