Port Arthur’s Jaylon Guilbeau is back on an NFL roster. The former Texas Longhorns cornerback signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, giving the four-year starter another chance after an undrafted spring and a brief stop in Carolina.

Guilbeau, a Memorial High School product, was a four-star recruit who committed to Texas, flipped to TCU, then returned to Austin after Gary Patterson’s departure.

He stayed four seasons under Steve Sarkisian, appearing in 44 games with 27 starts. Career totals: 124 tackles, eight tackles for loss, a sack, 11 passes defensed, and one interception.

In 2025, he started 10 of 12 games, posted 40 tackles, four pass breakups, and his first career pick while moving from nickel to more outside snaps.

He went undrafted in April, signed with the Carolina Panthers as a UDFA, then was waived in late July with a non-football injury designation.

On Sunday, he worked out in Pittsburgh alongside two other corners. A day later the Steelers added him and Navy running back Alex Tecza while activating Jalen Ramsey off the PUP list.

For Longhorn fans, this is a familiar grind story.

Texas has sent a steady stream of defensive backs to the NFL. Guilbeau’s size (listed around 5-foot-11, 190 pounds) and versatility make him a natural nickel candidate—the same “star” role he played as a junior before shifting outside as a senior.

He has cited toughness, competitiveness, and special-teams value as his calling cards. He also has Texas ties in the Steelers organization: former Longhorn Ryan Watts was a recent Pittsburgh draft pick who helped him in Austin.

The signing comes with the usual late-August caveat. Rosters must be cut to 53 soon, and Guilbeau will have only a few days and one preseason game to make an impression.

Still, the path from Port Arthur through the Forty Acres to a second NFL opportunity is the kind of story Texas football still sells.
