Former Nebraska Cornhuskers standout tight end Jack Stoll is back in the league again, and this time it is with the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers signed him to their practice squad. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo wrote, “The 49ers are signing veteran TE Jack Stoll to their practice squad. The former Eagles undrafted free agent played 15 games for the Saints last season.”
That is the same Jack we remember from Memorial Stadium. He is still listed at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds. He has bounced around a bit since leaving Lincoln, but he keeps finding work because he blocks and he stays ready.
San Francisco needed help at tight end after Jake Tonges hurt his knee in the 49ers’ Week 1 win over the Rams. George Kittle is also being eased back after last winter’s Achilles tear. When a room gets thin like that, teams look for a veteran who already knows how to line up and not mess up the run game.
Stoll went undrafted out of Nebraska in 2021 and made the Eagles anyway. He spent three seasons in Philadelphia and parts of 2024 with the Eagles and Dolphins. He also had stops with the Giants, Saints, and Browns before this latest move.
Last year in New Orleans he played 15 games and started four. He caught six passes for 46 yards and scored his first regular-season touchdown. For his career he has 76 games, 32 starts, 28 catches, 239 yards, and that one score.
He was with the Eagles early in 2024, then finished the year in Miami while Philadelphia went on to win the Super Bowl. That had to sting. You work that hard and then watch it from another locker room.
Back in Lincoln he ran a 4.60 in the 40 at his pro day. That number still comes up whenever people talk about how he got a shot as an undrafted guy. He was never the flashy receiver. He was the one who finished blocks and caught what was thrown to him.
From a Husker standpoint, this is the kind of career a lot of fans respect. No first-round money. No easy path. Just another chance on a practice squad because a team needs a tight end who can block and know the calls.
The 49ers play the Dolphins this week. If San Francisco has to shuffle the practice squad to make room, Stoll could be practicing with them soon. That would put him back in a building that already knows pieces of the offense he learned in Miami.
It will be interesting to see whether or not Stoll can make some noise with the 49ers. Nebraska fans will continue rooting him on as he continues to work at making his NFL dream stick.
