That memory sits uneasily beside new reports that the former Los Angeles guard was arrested Tuesday in Texas on a family-violence charge, via TMZ.
Hunt County jail records show Smith was booked on a charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence. He was being held at the Hunt County Detention Center, and records listed no bond at the time the booking became public.
Details of the alleged incident, the identity of anyone involved, and whether he has entered a plea were not included in the initial jail information. The charge is an accusation, not a conviction.
Smith’s Lakers chapter was brief and oddly complete. Los Angeles signed him in July 2020 after he had been away from the league, and he appeared in the Finals against Miami. Game 3 of that series, on October 4, 2020, was the last NBA game he played.
He did not return for another season in purple and gold, and he never made a formal retirement announcement that stuck in the public record the way his two rings did. The first of those rings came with Cleveland in 2016.
The second came with the Lakers in the strangest championship run in recent franchise history: empty arenas, a restart in Florida, and a veteran wing who could still space the floor when LeBron James and Anthony Davis needed a third scorer.
