The Miami Dolphins waived former Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Mark Gronowski on Sunday as they cut to a 53-man roster. Miami plans to sign him to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

For Hawkeye fans, the news is familiar. Gronowski won in Iowa City as a one-year transfer. He did not win a roster spot in South Florida.

Gronowski signed with Miami as an undrafted free agent after the 2026 draft. The Dolphins waived him Aug. 7 after uneven camp work, then brought him back Aug. 16 when Quinn Ewers was injured.

In two preseason games, he completed 6 of 13 passes for 98 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions, and rushed for 37 yards.

Miami later acquired Kyle McCord to back up Malik Willis and cut Gronowski and Cam Miller.

That does not change what he did at Iowa. After four seasons and two FCS titles at South Dakota State, Gronowski transferred to Iowa for 2025 and started 13 games.

He completed 166 of 262 passes for 1,741 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He ran for 545 yards and 16 touchdowns, a Hawkeye single-season rushing-TD mark. Across SDSU and Iowa, he finished as Division I’s winningest quarterback, with 58 career wins.

Iowa used him as a physical dual-threat, not a volume passer. He protected the football enough, ran when plays broke down, and helped the Hawkeyes stay competitive.

The NFL wanted cleaner accuracy in fewer reps. Camp reports cited interceptions. Preseason tape showed the runner Iowa fans knew and a still-raw arm.

A practice-squad deal would keep him in Miami’s building. A claim would send him elsewhere.

Either way, his Iowa chapter is set: 16 rushing scores in Kinnick and a winner’s résumé that never quite translated to an opening-day NFL roster.

Hawkeye quarterbacks rarely get an easy first year. Gronowski’s next job is the same as every undrafted backup’s — stay ready for the next injury or opening. Iowa fans will keep watching.
