Former Indiana Hoosiers linebacker Cam Jones is heading back to familiar territory in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs signed the Memphis native on Wednesday, reuniting him with the franchise that first gave him a chance as an undrafted free agent three years ago.

For those who followed Jones through five seasons in Bloomington, the move feels like a fitting next chapter for one of the program’s most respected recent leaders.

Jones arrived at Indiana in 2018 as a three-star recruit out of St. Benedict at Auburndale High School and quickly became a fixture in the Hoosiers’ defense.

He appeared in 47 games across his career, finishing with 209 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, two interceptions and five forced fumbles. One of those interceptions came in 2019 against UConn, when Jones raced 44 yards the other way for a touchdown. That play captured the energy he brought every week.

What set Jones apart, however, was his presence in the locker room. He served as a team captain in 2020, 2021 and 2022, becoming just the third player in Indiana football history to earn that honor three times, joining Antwaan Randle El and Emmett King.

He started as a safety-type “husky” before settling in at linebacker and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition in both 2020 and 2022.

His 2021 season produced a career-high 64 tackles. In 2022 he was off to one of the strongest starts in recent IU history, stacking 54 tackles through five games before an injury ended his college career.

Those traits translated immediately after the 2023 draft. Jones signed with Kansas City, made the 53-man roster as a rookie and played in every game that season and the next.

He contributed primarily on special teams while earning a Super Bowl LVIII ring when the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers.

After a year with the New York Jets and a brief stint with the Giants, Jones is back where his professional career began, now wearing No. 45 and competing for a roster spot in a crowded linebacker room.

Hoosier fans who watched Jones grow from a freshman contributor into a three-time captain will recognize the same reliability and toughness that defined his time in cream and crimson.

He never sought the spotlight, yet he consistently produced and led. Returning to a Super Bowl-caliber roster gives him another opportunity to prove what Indiana coaches always saw in him.

For a program that takes pride in sending prepared, high-character players to the next level, Jones remains one of its clearest success stories.
