Florida State Seminoles fans have been watching wide receiver Johnny Wilson bounce back and forth between the waiver wire and the Philadelphia Eagles’ active roster, and now, the Eagles have made a final decision on the towering weapon.

Philadelphia waived the 25-year-old with an injury designation ahead of its second preseason contest against the New England Patriots. In a league always hungry for size and length at the receiver position, Wilson’s availability drew attention across the NFL. Yet no team claimed him off waivers.

As a result, the Eagles were able to place him on injured reserve, exactly the outcome the front office preferred. But it still isn’t exactly great news for the former Seminole.

Wilson’s path has been anything but smooth since leaving Tallahassee.

Selected by the Eagles after a productive college career that included 41 receptions for 617 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games during his junior season, he arrived in the NFL with high expectations.

Over his full time at Florida State he amassed 1,757 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, showcasing the contested-catch ability and vertical threat that made him a favorite among Seminoles supporters.

His rookie year in 2024 offered limited production—five catches for 38 yards and one touchdown across 16 games—but he earned a Super Bowl ring as Philadelphia reached the championship.

Injuries then intervened. Knee and ankle issues required surgery, costing him the entire 2025 season. Those same problems have lingered into the current preseason, forcing the latest roster decision.

For Noles alumni and fans, the news carries a familiar mix of concern and optimism. Wilson’s physical tools remain rare, and the Eagles’ decision to keep him under their control signals continued belief in the former Florida State standout.

Once healthy, he will have another opportunity to carve out a larger role and prove that the production he delivered in Doak Campbell Stadium can translate more consistently at the next level.

In the meantime, Philadelphia will search for additional receiver depth while Wilson focuses on recovery.

Seminoles followers will be watching closely, hoping the big target who once stretched the field in garnet and gold can soon return to the field and remind the league why Howie Roseman’s front office valued him so highly coming out of college.
