Four-star edge rusher Keoni Snipes has trimmed his recruitment to 10 schools, a development Florida Gators coaches and fans can reasonably view as another encouraging sign for Jon Sumrall’s early work on the 2028 class.
Hayes Fawcett of Rivals reported the news late Tuesday, writing, “NEWS: Four-Star EDGE Keoni Snipes is down to 10 Schools, he tells me for @Rivals.”
Fawcett added that the 6-foot-6, 250-pound prospect from Saraland, Alabama, ranks as a top-100 recruit in the 2028 Rivals Industry Rankings.
For a Gators program still installing Sumrall’s culture after last winter’s coaching change, surviving the first major cut from a 58-offer board matters. Snipes is a long, physical pass rusher with the frame and production to become a difference-maker on the edge. Florida has already invested heavily in the relationship.
Snipes visited Gainesville more than once this offseason, including Friday Night Lights and Grill in the Ville. Those trips left an impression. In earlier comments to recruiting outlets, he pointed specifically to Sumrall when explaining why Florida stood out among a crowded field of SEC suitors.
That connection dates back further than Sumrall’s arrival in Gainesville. Snipes has said Sumrall offered him while still at Tulane, giving the Gators a head start that many programs chasing him this fall do not have.
The timing also helps. Sumrall’s first Florida team has shown toughness and swagger in the early part of the 2026 season, including a statement win over Ole Miss that has drawn national attention. Recruits notice when a new staff starts winning immediately.
Florida is not the only program still in the mix. Oklahoma, Auburn, Texas A&M, Texas, LSU and others have stayed aggressive. Snipes has planned additional visits this fall, including stops that could reshape the order of his remaining schools.
Yet the first cut is still a win for the Gators. Many of the 48 programs that offered and did not make the list had name recognition, facilities and resources. Florida did not get trimmed.
Industry prediction models have at times listed Florida among the leaders for Snipes. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has shown the Gators with a meaningful share of the projected outcome, reflecting the combination of visits, staff continuity and scheme fit.
Sumrall’s staff has emphasized edge talent as a priority. A player of Snipes’ size and burst would fit the attacking front Florida wants to build. At 6-6 and 250 pounds as a high school junior, he already possesses the length NFL teams covet.
Snipes has spoken about eventually cutting the list from 10 to five. That next step will be the true test. Programs that stay consistent with communication and development plans tend to survive those later cuts.
For Gator Nation, the immediate takeaway is simpler. A highly ranked Alabama prospect with a personal history with Sumrall just kept Florida in a group of 10. That is progress in a cycle that will define whether the new staff can reload the roster with high-end talent.
The Swamp has hosted Snipes before. The staff will now try to get him back on campus while the season continues and the remaining visits play out. Surviving the first cut does not equal a commitment. It does mean Florida is still in the conversation for a player who could anchor the edge for years.
That is the kind of news Sumrall’s staff wants to see as it builds the 2028 class one relationship at a time.
