The Atlanta Falcons entered the offseason expecting Michael Penix Jr. to be a major part of their long-term plans, but a series of changes inside the organization has created uncertainty around the young quarterback’s future.
With a new leadership group in place and competition at the position emerging, Penix’s role heading into the 2026 season is no longer considered guaranteed.
Penix, who was selected eighth overall by Atlanta in the 2024 NFL Draft, was viewed as the team’s potential franchise quarterback after eventually taking over the starting role. However, his progress was interrupted when he suffered a season-ending ACL injury in 2025, leaving questions about his recovery timeline and availability entering the new season.
The Falcons’ new decision-makers have avoided naming Penix as the unquestioned starter. Instead, they have indicated that the quarterback position will be evaluated as the team prepares for the upcoming campaign. That approach has fueled speculation that Penix could face a legitimate competition for the job rather than simply reclaiming his previous role.
One of the biggest developments affecting the situation was Atlanta’s addition of veteran quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The move introduced another experienced option into the quarterback room and created a battle that could extend through training camp. While Penix continues his rehabilitation, Tagovailoa has an opportunity to compete for the starting position.
The uncertainty surrounding Penix was highlighted by comments from Josh Kendall of The Athletic, who was asked about his prediction for the team’s Week 1 starter. Kendall acknowledged that the outcome was difficult to predict but shared his current expectation.
“I sincerely don’t know,” Kendall said before describing the competition between Penix and Tagovailoa as a legitimate battle. He added that, at this point, he believes Tagovailoa is likely to begin the season as Atlanta’s starter. Kendall also isn’t sure if Penix will stick around for the long haul.
“He has 12 starts, four wins, two 300-yard games and a 59.6 percent completion rate in his career. Fair or not, the decision clock on his future is already ticking,” Kendall wrote. “So far, Penix has done nothing to justify picking up his fifth-year option, much less offering him a long-term deal. There’s still a lot of optimism in the building that he can, but he’s got to beat out Tua Tagovailoa for the starting job first.”
Kendall’s comments reflect the broader uncertainty surrounding the Falcons’ quarterback situation rather than an official decision from the team. Atlanta’s coaching staff has maintained that Penix’s health will be a key factor in determining how the competition unfolds. Quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt previously indicated that a true competition would be difficult until Penix is able to participate fully.
For Penix, the challenge is not only returning from injury but also proving that he remains the quarterback capable of leading the Falcons into the future. His strong arm and potential were major reasons Atlanta invested a high first-round pick in him, but the organization’s new leadership has made clear that every position must be evaluated moving forward.
The upcoming training camp will likely determine the direction of Atlanta’s quarterback plans. If Penix can demonstrate that he has fully recovered and can regain the form that made him a top prospect, he could still secure the starting role. However, with Tagovailoa bringing experience and a new coaching staff making its own evaluations, Penix will have to earn the opportunity once again.
