The Atlanta Falcons find themselves in an unexpected bind after the recent injury to promising edge rusher Jalon Walker. The 2025 first-round selection tore his ACL during practice, sidelining a player who had shown real promise with 5.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles in his rookie campaign.

What was supposed to be a larger role for Walker this season has suddenly vanished, leaving a noticeable gap on a defense that already lacked consistent pressure generators.

Justin Carter of FanSided has examined one potential solution that could address Atlanta’s needs while also resolving a looming situation in New York.

The Giants selected Arvell Reese in the first round this year after taking Abdul Carter in the opening round the previous draft. That investment makes it increasingly clear that 2022 first-rounder Kayvon Thibodeaux is unlikely to remain a long-term fixture in the Meadowlands.

Rather than risk losing him for nothing or committing significant money that could be better spent elsewhere, New York may look to move him.

Carter notes that the NFC South appears wide open. No team stands out as a clear favorite, and a modest win total could be enough to claim the division. That competitive landscape gives the Falcons reason to act aggressively rather than simply hoping internal options step up.

Of the edge players who logged enough snaps to appear on recent performance rankings, Walker had been the highest-graded, yet even he ranked only in the middle of the pack league-wide. Atlanta simply does not have reliable talent ready to fill the void.

Thibodeaux is far from a perfect fit. He profiles more as a linebacker than a pure edge rusher, and his 2025 numbers were the weakest of his career across a limited snap count.

Still, those reduced opportunities matter. In his best season he logged nearly a thousand snaps; last year that total fell by roughly half. A larger role in Atlanta could unlock the production the Falcons need.

Carter suggests a relatively modest package — perhaps a third-round pick in exchange for Thibodeaux and a fifth-rounder — might be enough to get a deal done, making for an intriguing three-player trade between NFC foes.

Extending Thibodeaux carries risk, yet the Falcons’ need for front-seven talent makes a multi-year commitment a reasonable calculated gamble.

Whether the two sides ultimately connect remains to be seen. What is clear is that Walker’s injury has created an opening, and Thibodeaux represents one of the more intriguing available answers for a Falcons team that cannot afford to stand still in a division ready to be claimed.
