In a recent analysis of the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster outlook midway through the 2026 training camp, Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice offered a detailed look at which players stand as locks to make the 53-man roster, those who are close but not quite secure, the bubble candidates, and the long shots.
One name that stands out in the conversation about potential cuts is wide receiver Marquise Brown, whose status has shifted in a way that raises questions about his future with the team.
Kempski moved Brown down from a more secure category into the not-quite-locks group. The reasoning centers on Brown’s performance relative to the other receivers on the roster during the early weeks of camp.
While Kempski still largely expects Brown to make the team, he notes that at least four other receivers have outplayed him so far: DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Darius Cooper, and Elijah Moore.
He even floated the possibility of adding Johnny Wilson to that group ahead of Brown, while acknowledging that Makai Lemon, despite limited production in camp, is all but certain to stick because of his draft status and role.
“How many receivers can they keep? There should probably be some pressure for Brown to pick up his game,” Kempski wrote.
Brown arrived in Philadelphia with $5 million in guaranteed money and a track record as a productive professional receiver. That investment, along with the fact that signing him canceled out a compensatory draft pick for the Eagles, creates a financial and roster incentive to keep him.
Yet the competitive depth at the position introduces real pressure. The Eagles can only carry so many wide receivers, and if Brown continues to lag behind in practice, the team could face a difficult decision about whether his experience and guaranteed salary outweigh the emerging contributions of younger or cheaper alternatives.
Brown’s demotion in Kempski’s rankings underscores that roster spots are not guaranteed by contract alone. For a player of Brown’s caliber, the message is clear: the competition is fierce, and continued underperformance relative to his teammates could force the Eagles to consider cutting him as they finalize the 53-man roster.
This mid-camp update from Kempski reflects the fluid nature of roster construction under general manager Howie Roseman. Decisions at wide receiver will hinge not only on individual talent but on how the group fits together and how many bodies the team can afford to keep.
Brown’s situation illustrates that even experienced veterans with guaranteed money can find themselves under pressure when younger players seize opportunities in practice.
