As NFL training camps open across the league, another free agent has found a new home just in time. Clelin Ferrell, the former Las Vegas Raiders first-round selection, has signed with the Miami Dolphins, ending a stretch of free agency that had stretched through the entire offseason.
The Dolphins made the move official with a roster announcement that also included the waiver of defensive lineman Kahlil Saunders.
Ferrell arrives in Miami after splitting the previous season between the Los Angeles Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers. For a player once selected fourth overall in the 2019 draft, the path to this latest opportunity has been anything but straightforward.
Back when the Raiders made that surprising selection, most draft analysts had projected Ferrell as a late first-round talent at best. Landing him at No. 4 created enormous expectations that were always going to be difficult to meet.
Calling him a pure bust overlooks the reality of those pre-draft projections, yet the weight of that high selection has followed him throughout his career. What he has managed to build since leaving Las Vegas is a steady, durable presence on the defensive line rather than the elite pass-rushing star some hoped he would become.
Ferrell’s game has long centered on solid run defense and the ability to stay available. He is not expected to transform Miami’s edge rush overnight, but the Dolphins enter a new coaching era that could give him a genuine chance to carve out a meaningful role.
For a veteran who has bounced between teams and waited months for a landing spot, simply being under contract as camps begin is a meaningful step.
The signing also arrives against the backdrop of ongoing drama surrounding another member of that same 2019 Raiders draft class. Maxx Crosby, who has developed into one of the league’s premier defensive ends, remains in Las Vegas after a potential trade to the Baltimore Ravens fell apart earlier in the offseason.
Trade speculation continues to swirl, especially if the Raiders struggle and Crosby returns to form following knee surgery. For now he is still a Raider, though the possibility of future movement has not disappeared.
Meanwhile, the Raiders themselves could still look to reshape their defensive line. Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Vita Vea has requested a trade, and Las Vegas has been mentioned among the destinations that interest him. Adding a proven interior force like Vea would address a clear roster need, though the cost of any deal could prove prohibitive.
For Ferrell, the focus is narrower and more immediate. He joins a Dolphins roster looking for reliable depth and competition along the edge as a new staff installs its schemes.
Whether this proves a short-term stop or the beginning of a longer chapter in Miami remains to be seen on the practice fields and in the games ahead.
What is clear is that the former top-five pick has another chance to contribute in the NFL, and that opportunity arrived just as training camp doors opened around the league.
