Miguel Rojas will not be in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup on Wednesday as they try to close out the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series.
Manager Dave Roberts said the veteran infielder’s lower back is sore after he left Tuesday’s Game 3 win at Truist Park, and the club has chosen to keep him out rather than risk a decision that could affect him later in October.
Roberts described the situation as “not great.” Rojas is laying low and will not be available for what could be a series-clinching game.
The Dodgers hold a two-games-to-one lead after Tuesday’s victory, and Roberts said the roster has enough depth on the bench that there is no reason to push Rojas into a start that might compromise his status if Los Angeles advances.
The priority, he indicated, is preserving the player for a potential next round rather than squeezing one more day out of a sore back.
The tightness set in during Game 3 after a play at second base. Rojas said he slipped on the grass and never fully recovered. He noted that the surface at Truist Park has been inconsistent, with new grass installed in the middle of the year, and that the Dodgers knew the field could be a factor before the series began.
Starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto slipped as well. Rojas felt the issue move into his hip and then into his lower back. He stayed in as long as he could, but the discomfort did not ease.
He finished the night 0-for-3. After the game he still sounded hopeful that treatment might get him ready for Wednesday.
He planned a couple of rounds of work on the back and said it was too early to know how he would feel when he woke up. By the next afternoon the club had already ruled him out.
Even so, Rojas framed the night around the game rather than the injury.
He said he was simply glad to have been part of it, calling it one of the best games he has been in because of how his teammates stayed with the planned approach and were willing to sacrifice to do it.
He added that he expects to be fine no matter how the back responds, and that being on the field for that win mattered more to him than the box-score line.
For the Dodgers, the absence is inconvenient but not a surprise given how the injury developed.
They will lean on the rest of the infield and an extended bench in Atlanta, with Rojas held back in case the series ends and another one begins.
