The Los Angeles Dodgers opened a three-game series in Miami on Friday looking to stretch a winning streak that already included consecutive sweeps of the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds.
Before the 4:10 p.m. Pacific first pitch, manager Dave Roberts delivered news that immediately reshaped the lineup: first baseman Freddie Freeman would sit for a second straight game while managing a knee issue, via Katie Woo of The Athletic.
Roberts framed the decision as precautionary rather than a sign of worsening trouble. Long travel, a turf surface, and the simple value of another day of rest all factored into keeping Freeman out of Friday’s contest. The manager said he expected the veteran to return Saturday.
Regardless, it’s still never a good thing to see Freeman sidelined so close to the postseason.
The approach echoed the club’s recent handling of Shohei Ohtani, who received similar extra rest only to land on the injured list after a brief return. Roberts and the training staff appear determined to keep Freeman available down the stretch without forcing him onto the shelf.
In Freeman’s absence the Dodgers turned to another storyline that generated its own buzz. With Ohtani already on the injured list, Los Angeles called up top prospect Josue De Paula and slotted the 21-year-old into the designated-hitter spot for his major-league debut.
Ranked among the game’s elite prospects, De Paula arrived in Miami as a reminder of the organization’s depth. Born in 2005, he was a small child when Freeman first reached the majors and still in grade school when Mookie Betts debuted.
Friday night therefore offered a vivid contrast between established stars and the next wave.

The rest of the order featured Tommy Edman in center, Max Muncy at third, Betts at shortstop, Kyle Tucker in right, Will Smith behind the plate, Teoscar Hernandez in left, De Paula at designated hitter, Alex Freeland at second, and Kiké Hernández at first.
The configuration kept the club’s offensive core intact while giving the young outfielder a high-profile introduction.
The Dodgers entered the series in strong form and with playoff positioning still in play. Sitting a key veteran on a night when rest, travel, and surface conditions aligned made sense on paper.
Whether Freeman’s knee responds as hoped on Saturday will determine how much that extra day actually costs the club.
For one night, at least, the story belonged as much to a cautious veteran’s absence as to a highly regarded prospect’s first at-bats in a Dodgers uniform.
