Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pushed back against criticism of his team’s latest big move, saying other clubs had the same chance to land ace pitcher Tarik Skubal.

The Dodgers acquired the two-time Cy Young Award winner from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday in a deal that sent outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith to Detroit. The official announcement came Sunday afternoon through the team’s social media channels.

Roberts spoke with reporters after the trade became public. He made clear he saw nothing improper in the way the front office handled the negotiations.

“There’s nothing that we did that no one else couldn’t have done. I just love our front office,” Roberts said.

The manager learned of the agreement only minutes before the Dodgers faced the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night. Word of the completed trade spread roughly 15 minutes after that game ended.

Skubal has established himself as one of the top left-handed starters in baseball. His arrival adds another high-end arm to a Dodgers pitching staff already considered among the strongest in the majors.

Discussion across baseball circles quickly focused on the Dodgers’ ability to make such aggressive moves. Some observers pointed to the team’s financial resources as the reason they could absorb the cost of acquiring a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber while other clubs held back.

Roberts rejected the idea that only Los Angeles could have completed a similar package. He noted that any organization willing to part with comparable young talent had the opportunity to step forward.

Teams such as the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays were among those frequently mentioned as possible suitors. Both clubs operate with tighter budgets and greater reliance on developing their own prospects, factors that may have limited their willingness to match the Dodgers’ offer.

The trade package reflects the depth of Los Angeles’ farm system. Hope, Ryan and Smith represent the kind of high-upside talent many organizations are reluctant to surrender, especially when those players could contribute at the major league level in the near future.

For the Dodgers, the calculation appears different. Their major league roster is already stacked with established stars, which reduces the immediate need to promote prospects and creates more flexibility in trade talks.

Roberts has guided the team through multiple deep postseason runs, including a World Series title in 2024. His position has grown more secure with each successful campaign, and the addition of Skubal further strengthens the group he manages on a daily basis.

The deal is expected to rank among the most significant of the current trading period. Skubal’s track record of dominance makes him a potential difference-maker for a club aiming to contend for another championship this season.

Questions about competitive balance are likely to continue in the days ahead. Roberts’ comments frame the transaction as the result of decisive front-office work rather than an unfair advantage unique to one franchise.

As the Dodgers prepare to integrate their newest pitcher, attention will shift to how the rotation looks with Skubal in the mix and whether other clubs attempt similar bold moves before the season reaches its final stretch.
