The Detroit Tigers have been defying all odds over the last month-and-a-half of the MLB season, roaring into the playoff picture.
Now, they are bringing in some reinforcements.
The Tigers have called up top pitching prospect Jackson Jobe, via Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press. As a corresponding move, they designated right-hander Shelby Miller for assignment.
Jobe was regarded as a top-20 prospect in baseball heading into the 2024 campaign.
In 21 minor-league starts this season, the 22-year-old went 5-3 with a 2.36 ERA, allowing 58 hits while registering 96 strikeouts over 91.2 innings of work.
The Irving, Tx. native was selected by Detroit with the third overall pick of the 2021 MLB Draft.
Over the course of three minor-league campaigns, Jobe has pitched to the tune of a 2.97 ERA while registering 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
The question is whether or not the righty will be eligible for the Tigers’ postseason roster in the event that Detroit makes the playoffs.
Technically, a player not on the 40-man roster prior to September is not officially eligible, but they could be granted an exception by the commissioner.
The Tigers have been the hottest team in baseball of late.
After moving numerous pieces at the trade deadline, including star pitcher Jack Flaherty, Detroit was 55-63 and did not even resemble a playoff contender.
However, since then, the Tigers have gone 27-11 to vault themselves into the American League’s second Wild Card spot. They are currently tied with the Kansas City Royals at 82-74, but are ahead of their AL Central rivals via the tiebreaker.
The Minnesota Twins are one game behind Detroit at 81-75.
The Detroit Tigers have not made the playoffs since 2014.
