As NFL training camp draws near, one of the more interesting names still floating in free agency is veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
After six productive seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and a one-year stop in Washington with the Commanders, Samuel finds himself weighing his options, and recent social media activity has fans buzzing about a possible homecoming.
It all started with a simple workout video Samuel posted on Instagram, captioned something along the lines of letting the chips fall where they may.
His old teammates didn’t waste any time jumping in the comments. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk offered up a guest house, and then tight end George Kittle piled on with his own playful message about having a spot labeled “Deebo’s second home.” Those kinds of lighthearted exchanges from guys who shared so many big moments together speak volumes. They’re not just nostalgia—they hint at real relationships that never really faded.
Samuel’s time in San Francisco was special. He was far more than just a wideout; he was a Swiss Army knife who could line up in the slot, split out wide, or even take handoffs out of the backfield like a running back.
Over those six seasons, he racked up impressive numbers both catching and carrying the ball, helping the team reach the Super Bowl multiple times. His ability to create yards after contact and break tackles made him a nightmare for defenses and a perfect fit in Kyle Shanahan’s creative offense.
Last season in Washington, even with some quarterback instability, Samuel still put up solid production—72 catches for 727 yards and five touchdowns.
He showed he still has plenty left in the tank at age 30. But the market for veteran receivers has been quiet, and he remains unsigned as teams lean toward younger, cheaper options. That situation could actually work in the 49ers’ favor if they’re looking for a familiar, proven piece on a more team-friendly deal.
From San Francisco’s perspective, the receiving room has some talent with guys like Mike Evans, Ricky Pearsall, and others, but adding Samuel back into the mix could instantly upgrade their versatility.
He knows the system inside and out, understands the culture, and has that proven chemistry with Brock Purdy and especially George Kittle. Bringing him back wouldn’t require a long adjustment period—he could step in and contribute right away, particularly in the slot role where his toughness shines.
Of course, there are always questions about fit and finances. The 49ers have been navigating cap space and roster construction carefully. Yet the buzz from Kittle and Juszczyk feels genuine, and in a league where familiarity and trust can go a long way, reuniting with a player who helped carry them through some memorable runs makes a lot of sense.
Samuel has already experienced a change of scenery, and now the door seems open for him to return to a place where he thrived.
It’s still early, and nothing is guaranteed in free agency. But when your former teammates are publicly rolling out the welcome mat like this, it’s hard not to imagine Deebo back in the red and gold, chipping away in Shanahan’s offense once again.
For a player who loves to compete and a team that values toughness and versatility, it could be a reunion that benefits everyone involved. Fans would certainly love to see it.
