Deebo Samuel is returning to the San Francisco 49ers after a one-year detour with the Washington Commanders, and the veteran wide receiver wasted little time confirming both the deal and the number he will wear once he steps back onto the practice field in Santa Clara.

Just days into training camp, the 49ers completed a one-year, $7 million agreement with Samuel, reuniting him with the franchise where he spent the first six seasons of his career.

Shortly after the signing became public, Samuel took to Instagram to celebrate the homecoming. In the same post he announced he would wear No. 19, the jersey number he sported from 2019 through 2023 before switching to No. 1 in 2024.

The caption simply read “19 Baxxkkkkk,” paired with a collage of photos from his earlier years in the scarlet and gold. The choice restores a familiar look for a player who has been one of the most physical and versatile weapons in the league.

Samuel arrives at a moment when the 49ers offense already carries considerable star power. The team added veteran receiver Mike Evans in free agency and continues to feature Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle and Brock Purdy.

Ricky Pearsall remains a question mark while recovering from a lingering knee injury, a situation that almost certainly influenced San Francisco’s decision to bring Samuel back. Should Pearsall miss time, rookie De’Zhaun Stribling could be pressed into a larger role as the third receiver.

Samuel enters his eighth NFL season with a résumé that includes a Pro Bowl selection and a First-Team All-Pro honor. Last year in Washington he recorded 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns despite the Commanders’ quarterback instability.

Across his career he has amassed 406 catches for 5,519 yards and 27 receiving touchdowns, along with 1,218 rushing yards and 21 scores on the ground—numbers that underscore the dual-threat ability that once made him a cornerstone of Kyle Shanahan’s scheme.

Samuel has also made it to a pair of Super Bowls, both coming with San Francisco.

For 49ers fans, the sight of Samuel in No. 19 again will feel like a return to familiar form.

Whether he slots in as a primary target or provides depth behind Evans and Pearsall, his presence adds proven experience and physicality to an already talented receiving corps.

Training camp has only just begun, but the reunion already has the attention of the Bay Area.
