Dallas Stars Motivated By Success of Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Stars are locked in a tight battle with the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Finals. The series is heading back to Dallas for Game 5 on Friday night, and the Stars are drawing inspiration from their NBA counterparts, the Dallas Mavericks.

On Thursday night, the Dallas Mavericks punched their ticket to the NBA Finals after defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. They will be looking to take home the second NBA Championship in franchise history after winning their first in 2011.

The success of the Mavericks is something that is driving the Dallas Stars. As shared by captain Jamie Benn, his team is motivated to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals and make some impressive sports history in the process.

“I think it only drives you to get to that same point. Obviously, we want to get to the finals here. We’ve got a best of three, with home ice, to do that. Seeing the Mavs almost get to their goal of winning, we want to be there too.”

There has never been an NHL and NBA team in the same city or region that has won championships in the same season. It has happened 10 times previously, with the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers doing it just last season.

Alas, both teams fell short. The Miami Heat were defeated by the Denver Nuggets in five games, while the Panthers were beaten by the Vegas Golden Knights, also in five games.

That is the fifth time that both teams from the same city or region lost when making the finals in the same season. The NBA team has won twice with the NHL team losing, and three times the NHL team won with the NBA team falling short.

Fans are certainly hoping to see it happen again this season. Not only do the Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks share a fan base, but they both both in American Airlines Arena. They are certainly hoping that June is jampacked with championship series games.

“Playing in the same arena, being around a team like the Mavs and I’m definitely getting into it a lot more, especially in this playoff run for them,” Wyatt Johnson said. “The games are really exciting, it’s fun to watch, and I mean it’s great for the city having two teams going on deep runs. It motivates us.”

In the 2023 season, the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks to win the World Series in MLB. The only team missing out on the fun from the area is the Dallas Cowboys, who haven’t advanced to an NFC Championship Game since 1996, which was the last time they won a Super Bowl.
