The 2024 NBA Draft was completed Thursday night, but the whirlwind of moves is just getting started. After several trades were completed during the two rounds, the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons completed another on Friday morning centered around Tim Hardaway Jr.
The veteran sharpshooter is on his way to the Motor City in what is a cap-saving move for the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas is sending three second-round picks along with Tim Hardaway Jr. to Detroit in exchange for Quentin Grimes.
Tim Hardaway Jr. is due $16.2 million during the 2024-25 season, the final year of a four-year, $75 million contract. Grimes will be making a fraction of that at $4.3 million entering the final season of his rookie deal.
The 32-year-old sixth man was originally acquired by the Dallas Mavericks as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade with the New York Knicks. He had been a reliable source of offense throughout his tenure but lost his spot in the rotation during the playoffs.
Head coach Jason Kidd opted to go in a different direction with his minutes. Looking for a more defensive-minded player, they are getting one in Grimes. He has some real 3-and-D potential, starting 90 games during his tenure with the Knicks before he was traded to the Detroit Pistons ahead of the 2024 deadline.
It cost the Dallas Mavericks several second-round picks to complete this trade, but it is a great one for them. Not only is Grimes the kind of player who can thrive alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, it also improves their odds of retaining Derrick Jones Jr.
Set to hit free agency, the Mavericks now have the $12.9 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception to use. A chunk of that can go toward Jones, who the organization is determined to keep this offseason.
Tim Hardaway Jr. could find consistent minutes for the Detroit Pistons. His 3-point shooting and scoring prowess is something they desperately need more of, as the young squad lacks consistent threats from the perimeter.
