The Dallas Mavericks have made a couple of key additions this NBA offseason, acquiring guards Klay Thompson and Spencer Dinwiddie in separate transactions.

However, they may not be done dealing.

Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz has identified Brooklyn Nets forward—and former Maverick—Dorian Finney-Smith as a potential trade candidate for Dallas. He even proposes a trade package, suggesting that the Mavericks offer Jaden Hardy and Maxi Kleber in the deal.

Finney-Smith entered the NBA in 2016 and spent the first six-and-a-half seasons of his career with the Mavs before being traded to the Nets during the 2022-23 campaign.

He developed a reputation as a solid three-and-D forward in Dallas, with his best year coming in 2021-22 when he averaged 11 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals over 33.1 minutes per game on 47.1/39.5/67.5 shooting splits. He also displayed terrific defensive versatility.

Last season, Finney-Smith registered 8.5 points and 4.7 boards across 28.4 minutes a night while shooting 42.1 percent from the floor and 34.8 percent from three-point range.

The Dallas Mavericks could use another defender

The Mavericks definitely lost some defensive punch this summer, as Derrick Jones Jr. departed via free agency. While Thompson used to be a good defender, he has slipped considerably on that end.

As a result, it would make plenty of sense for Dallas to try and acquire an impressive defensive player like Finney-Smith, who probably will be available.

The Nets are in rebuilding mode, and with Finney-Smith being 31 years old and having a player option for 2025-26, he represents a prime trade candidate.

Of course, the Mavericks would hardly be the only team interested in Finney-Smith. In the modern NBA, long, rangy defenders who can hit the 3-ball are very valuable, so Dallas would face some competition in the race to re-acquire his services.
