Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has been one of the people linked to the Los Angeles Lakers opening of the same position. But, any chatter about him leaving for Hollywood can officially be put to rest.

Monday morning, it was announced that Kidd had agreed to a contract extension with the Mavericks, ending any rumors of him departing this offseason to replace Darvin Ham. Dallas worked fast to get something done, as they wanted to ensure their head coach wouldn’t be going anywhere.

“We are excited to have Coach Kidd continue to lead our team throughout the coming years with this well-earned contract extension,” said Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont. “Kidd led our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons, and we are looking forward to his leadership in continuing to build and grow this already great franchise.”

Jason Kidd is in his third season as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, the third stop in his coaching career. He has compiled a record of 140-106 in the regular season and 13-11 to this point in the postseason.

This is the second year Kidd has led Dallas to the postseason, which was also the second time he oversaw a 50+ win regular season. The Mavericks are still alive in the 2024 NBA Playoffs after defeating the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round. They are hoping to improve on their first playoff appearance under Kidd when they advanced to the Western Conference Finals but were defeated by the Phoenix Suns.

Mavericks general manager Nico Collins also expressed joy that Kidd would be remaining with the franchise. “I have known Jason for a long time, and I cannot think of a better, more qualified candidate to lead this team going forward. As a former NBA Champion Hall of Fame player, Jason brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role which cannot be duplicated. He has earned the trust and respect of our players and that of so many across the league, and I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to build upon the culture and foundation of success he’s helped foster throughout his tenure as head coach.”

No details have been revealed yet on how long the extension is or how much Jason Kidd will be paid. Dallas is the third stop in his head coaching career, as he spent one season with the Brooklyn Nets immediately after his playing days were over.

After that, he was with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he was fired 44 games into his fourth season on the job. He spent two seasons as an assistant with the Lakers before taking over the Dallas Mavericks job in 2021.
