Dallas Cowboys Reportedly Pursuing Blockbuster Trade

The Dallas Cowboys have spent more than a year rebuilding a defense that once looked ordinary and now looks expensive, physical, and unfinished. That last part is why Joey Porter Jr. is suddenly more than a rumor in North Texas.

League sources have told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Cowboys are among the teams that have already called Pittsburgh about the fourth-year corner, and the timing is not accidental.

Dallas has added Quinnen Williams, Rashan Gary, and Kenny Clark through trades and used first-round picks on Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence. The front and the linebacker room have been restocked. The secondary has not.

Corner remains the soft spot. Cobie Durant will miss Week 3 against Baltimore with a hamstring injury, and the Cowboys do not have a proven complement who can travel with elite receivers for four quarters.

Porter, the son of a former Steelers linebacker and a long-armed, physical cover man when healthy, would give Dallas a different kind of presence on the outside.

He has not played this season while working through a back injury and a prolonged ramp-up. He is listed as questionable for Pittsburgh’s game against Cincinnati, and he has made it clear he intends to play for the Steelers in 2026 even without a new deal. That last point is the complication.

Pittsburgh does not negotiate extensions during the season. Porter wants one. The Steelers will listen to trade offers, sources say, but only if the return is substantial.

From a Cowboys perspective, that price is the entire story. Jerry Jones has already spent draft capital and future flexibility to fortify the defensive line.

Paying another premium for a corner who has not taken a snap in 2026 would be a different kind of bet: one on health, scheme fit, and whether Porter’s contract situation makes him more available than he looks.

Dallas does not need another project. It needs a starter who can survive Lamar Jackson on Sunday and then survive the rest of a schedule that will keep testing the perimeter.

The Lions are in the same conversation because their secondary is even more battered. That only raises the cost. If Pittsburgh is going to move a player it still values, it will make the suitors compete.

For Cowboys fans, the question is not whether the front office should keep looking at the position. It already is.

The question is whether Porter is the player who closes the last obvious hole, or whether the price of closing it now is one more future first-round pick the franchise cannot afford to spend twice.

The calls have started. The compensation has not. That is where this story actually lives for Dallas.
